The Finer Things in Life

The Finer Things in Life

It is a trap many women fall into. It’s the “superwoman” complex. We feel that we must be the perfect employee, the perfect wife, and the perfect mother. We work hard at making sure that everyone around us is happy, comfortable, and content. In fact, most of us work so hard at that, we forget about us and the things that make us feel happy, comfortable and content.

It can be seen in a thousand little ways. The children have the best quality shoes to go to school in while we pick up the three dollar pair at the megamart. The husband has new custom-tailored business suits to impress his boss. We make do with the same old tired wardrobe we’ve had for the past ten years.

It’s not that we are not interested in the finer things in life. Like everyone else, we dream of exotic vacations, an in-ground pool in the backyard complete with a cabana boy, and jewelry expensive enough to require a personal bodyguard. Yet we know all of these things are unlikely indulgences that we will never have in our lives. So we continue to dream.

What we often forget is that some of the finer things in life are not really indulgences at all but smart investments. If we look at them in that light, we are more likely to consider the practical value of owning them rather than just the thrill of it.

A good example of this is a quality leather handbag. Many women throughout their lives end up with cheap handbags from the department store that don’t last more than a year and don’t hold all of the things they need on a regular basis. A handbag is our home away from home. It has to be our pharmacy, our first aid station, our kitchen, our dressing table and our office. A handbag should contain all of the items that we need when we’re away from home to handle every situation from a child’s scraped knee to a 3 pm snack attack. Cheap handbags rarely have the pockets to organize properly and everything ends up being a jumbled mess in the interior. Linings rip easily, clasps break, and handles tear away from the handbag. So we throw them out and buy another cheap purse.

Investing in a hand-crafted leather bag will end the cheap handbag syndrome forever. Leather is one of the most durable materials on earth as well as one of the most beautiful. A leather handbag will last for decades with proper ongoing care. It resists scuffs and scrapes and looks better over time rather than worse as with most other materials. The lining in a good leather handbag will be carefully stitched to avoid tearing and the handles will be firmly attached. All of those cheap purses you have purchased over the years cost more than a quality leather bag- and looked cheap. A good leather handbag will help keep you organized and looking stylish.

Now when you look at it that way, doesn’t it just make sense to treat yourself to some of the finer things in life?

Cowboy Boots 101

Cowboy Boots 101

Cowboy boots have been around as long as ranchers have chased herds of cattle and bison across the wide open spaces of this country. Cowboy boots developed from popular riding boots in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. The style was both practical and fashionable. It was also was the favored boot in the Civil War, called the Wellington at that time.

It wasn’t until the 1950’s, though, that the popularity of the cowboy boot caught fire. Hollywood actors like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers made every boy and girl under the age of 20 yearn to be a cowboy or cowgirl, riding the range and wearing the coolest boots ever. Hollywood turned what was once a practical and utilitarian boot into a colorful fashion statement. The modern cowboy boot was born.

Today, cowboy boots are more often seen walking the urban streets than roping steer. Most cowboy boots are still made from leather but they can now be found in snakeskin, alligator and ostrich. A good pair of off-the-shelf leather cowboy boots can cost $100 to $500. While that seems expensive at first, well-made cowboy boots from companies like Ariat can last for decades with regular care.

Finding the perfect cowboy boot for you is more of an art than a science but there are still a few rules to follow. The most important rule is that it doesn’t matter how exquisite the boot or how good the sale is, if it doesn’t fit comfortably, you will never wear them. When trying on new cowboy boots, they should feel snug around the top of the foot as leather will loosen slightly over time. However, they should not feel tight against the toes. If they are, then exchange them for a half size larger. Pressure against the toes will radiate and cause foot and back pain over time.

Another important rule is to not buy fake leather cowboy boots. These are often made from a type of manufactured vinyl or rubber. These materials will wear differently over time than leather and will not hold up to wear and tear the same way leather will. Also, synthetic materials like vinyl don’t breathe or allow air exchange at all so feet will sweat more and be more uncomfortable.

Once you have chosen the perfect pair of cowboy boots, learning to maintain them will bring the biggest rewards. Proper ongoing care will lengthen the life of the leather and make your boots look fabulous for years to come.

Keep your leather cowboy boots out of water as much as possible. Wet leather can swell and distort as well as leave water stains as it dries. If your boots are wet when you bring them home, you can dry them off with a paper towel and leave to dry naturally. Do not put them over a hot air register as rapid drying can crack and warp the leather. Clean dirt and mud from your boots regularly and condition with a professional leather conditioner to keep the leather moist. If your outer soles begin to wear, have them professionally replaced to keep your boots looking their best for a long time.
