Exposing your Business to Customers on the Web

The only way to have a successful website of any kind is to make sure people visit it. Without visitors to your website, it is little more than a paper ad posted on a bulletin board in your local supermarket. In fact, that bulletin board may be catching more customers than your website if your website isn’t search engine friendly.

Search engine friendly websites are those that provide the information search engines look for in order to determine the website’s purpose. It’s not only important to give them what they what, but you’ll also need to put it where they expect to find it. If the automated algorithms used by the major search engines can’t easily determine the main subjects of your website, then your website won’t receive a good ranking, at least not for the products and services that you want people to know about.

Search engines are responsible for delivering web users to the websites they are looking for more than 13 billion times each month. If your website isn’t highly ranked on those search engines, then every time someone searches for your products, they are being delivered to your competition. To get those customers back and delivered to your website, you may need the services of a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Marketer.

SEO Marketers are experts in helping websites raise their search engine ranking so that their websites receive more traffic and more sales. SEO marketers make study of the different ways in which search engines decide whether to give a website priority in its rankings for particularly keywords and keyword phrases. They then apply those techniques to your website.

Those techniques can involve adding relevant content to your website, changing the structure of your site, building links from relevant third party sites, and many more tried and true methods of raising your search engine placement for the keywords that will drive prospective customers to your website.

SEO Marketing is not a magic wand, though. While it will drive more traffic to your website as a result of better visibility to search engine users, converting that traffic into sales still depends upon your ability to close the deal. However, while your closure rate will remain the same, the fact that a much higher number of customers are being exposed to your sales and marketing pitch means that the total number of sales should climb as well.

Like any business, the key to success for a web-based retailer, is attracting more customers to your store. Only after you get them in the door can you begin to sell your products and services to them. You can have the best products at the best prices, but if nobody knows about it, then you won’t make any sales. For web-based businesses, search engine ranking is the exposure your business needs to succeed.
